We had to do in-depth research in order to establish the essential success criteria of our opening sequence.
Firstly, we want our opening sequence to sell, that is the main success point of every successful media product ever created, whether that be film, music, television or magazines. So then secondly we needed to establish a target audience that we were aiming to attract with our horror. We established a target audience of 15-25 year olds and not specifically for men but we used our research information and our own knowledge to establish that it is mainly men that are in to watching horror films. We chose to categorize our film as a 15 as therefore it appeals to our audience that we established. We also felt that by categorizing the film as a 15 rather than an 18, we were not narrowing our sales potential as if we had decided on an 18 rated film we would be unable to sell anywhere near the same amount of units as we will potentially sell with it rated as a 15.
